What Is a Breast Augmentation?
Breast augmentation — also known as breast implants or a “boob job” — is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the country.
People often get breast augmentation and implants confused, but they’re essentially the same thing. Augmentation is the procedure itself, and implants are one way to perform the augmentation.
A breast implant is a sac filled with a sterile material called silicone. Silicone gel implants generally look and feel more natural.
The reason that breast augmentation or implant surgery procedures are so popular is because of their long, successful track record. The procedure is one of the best options available for women who want to enhance, regain, or restore confidence in their figures.
After weight loss or pregnancy, breasts can often decrease in size. A breast augmentation will restore lost breast volume, achieve a more rounded breast shape, and improve natural breast symmetry.
Why Breast Augmentation at Willis Cosmetic Surgery
Breast augmentation increases breast size by using silicone gel implants and sometimes existing fat tissue. When existing fat tissue is used to improve breast volume, it’s called fat transfer breast augmentation.
Dr. Willis will perform your breast augmentation procedure by placing implants behind breast tissue or under the chest muscle.
This is most commonly done by making an incision on the underside of your breast, in the natural skin fold. Dr. Willis will then place the implant through this opening.
What to Expect With Breast Augmentation
Deciding whether or not to get breast implants is a big decision. While augmentation is generally a safe, long-lasting investment that will help you get the curves and confidence you desire, breast implants are not “lifetime devices.”
On average, modern implants are designed to last more than a decade. It’s not uncommon for breast implants to remain in good shape for 20 years or more. Everyone is different, and the life of your implants will depend on your body and how well you take care of your implants.
Here are some essential post-operative instructions that will help your implants last longer:
- Avoid strenuous physical activity for at least three to six weeks.
- Wear compression bras or a sports bra for support and to help the implants settle in place.
- Follow our provided instructions on bathing and surgical site care.
- Wait until six weeks to resume your routine activities, including returning to work.

FAQs About Breast Augmentation & Implants
Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that enhances the size and shape of the breasts by inserting implants — either silicone or saline — beneath the breast tissue or chest muscles.
The choice between silicone and saline implants, as well as the placement of the implants, depends on your desired outcome, body type, and recommendations from Dr. Willis.
The procedure not only increases breast size but can also improve symmetry and restore volume lost due to weight changes or pregnancy.
Preparation for breast augmentation involves several important steps:
- Medical evaluation: Obtain a medical evaluation and any necessary lab tests as directed by Dr. Willis.
- Medication consultation: Discuss your current medications with Dr. Willis — you may need to adjust or discontinue some medicines before surgery.
- Stopping smoking: If you smoke, you will need to stop well in advance of the procedure as smoking can impair healing.
- Making care arrangements: Arrange for someone to drive you to and from surgery and to stay with you for at least the first night following the procedure.
During the Procedure: Breast augmentation is typically performed under general anesthesia and takes about one to two hours. Dr. Willis will make incisions in inconspicuous areas to minimize visible scarring and insert the implants.
After the Procedure: Post-surgery, dressings or bandages will be applied to the incisions, and you may be wrapped in an elastic bandage or a support bra to minimize swelling and support the breasts as they heal. Initial swelling and soreness are normal and subside gradually over several weeks. Most patients are able to return to work within a week, although physical activity should be limited for up to six weeks.
Common side effects of breast augmentation include swelling, bruising, soreness, and temporary changes in sensation. These typically resolve within a few weeks.
More serious but rare complications might include infection, implant leakage or rupture, and capsular contracture (scar tissue that distorts the shape of the implant). It's important to discuss potential risks and symptoms to watch for with Dr. Willis during the pre-operative consultation.
